NITB Member's Rigs: Forrest & Debra D
BRONTO = made up of portions of Bronco and Pinto. BRON(co) from 1971 Bronco rolling chassis
and running gear and 1972 (Pin) TO body = BRONTO. However, Debra says, it is green and short
for "Brontosaurus". BRONTO. Take your pick! Either way, it is the Bronto.
The Bronto was our first off road 4 X 4. In the early 80's we acquired a "good deal"
(oh really!) on a rollover 1971 Bronco with an obviously very tired "302". The body
was obviously damaged. As time passed, we discovered that the transmission was also tired,
the transfer case needed help, the suspension was well used, the axles needed bearings, brakes
were gone and even the drivelines squalled in use.
As we further examined the Bronco body, we started looking for a replacement body. Our
"good deal" had turned to the seller whom was happy with the deal!
After awhile that green Pinto station wagon started looking pretty good and … wouldn't
it look "cool" on a Bronco chassis. But for all the repairs and work and the hard
work and the redo"s and the redo"s of the redo"s … the rest is history.
Our Bronto has served us well and has been not only used for many off road activities, but
as a daily driver and even loaned for basic transportation to family and friends when their
fancy transportation bit the dust. The Bronto is a member of our family and as such, we are
not outwardly offended in winning "ugliest 4x4 award" a couple times at show n'
shines.
